Organization: Ottawa Carleton Disstrict School Board (OCDSB)
Project Start Date: May 2020
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the OCDSB has launched a new initiative to help families in need with fresh produce and provide experiential learning about how to grow vegetables in their homes.
Led by the OCDSB Innovation and Adolescent Learning team, the Growing Learners project partners with the Education Foundation of Ottawa, Just Foods and the Ottawa Good Food Box.
Starting in mid-May, Good Food Box began the first of two deliveries of packages to 1000 students filled with fresh produce and garden starter kits. The produce boxes are supplied with a week’s worth of fresh fruits and vegetables. Each garden kit contains seeds, containers and an activity guide written in multiple languages to help families start growing their own vegetables.
We recognize that some students have limited or no outdoor space, which is why the growing guide is designed for apartment-living families.
Teachers will also be doing the growing at their homes and will use online videos, recipes and other resources to teach through the process.
The program will be focused on students in 20 schools across the OCDSB. The first packages were sent to families in May with additional produce boxes to be sent in June.
