Convertus – Converting Organic Material into Compost

Convertus - Converting Organic Material into Compost

(Theme 7 – Waste)

Organization: Convertus – We Give Resources New Life

Timeline for Completion: Since 2010 Ongoing

Objective:

Convertus was created in 2019 by the merger of Renewi Canada and Waste Treatment Technologies North America as a business ideally positioned to be a part of the emergency circular economy – an economy that keeps resources in use for as long as possible through recycling and recovery. Together, we provide our customers with a complete solution for all of their organic waste sector needs.

Our composting facility has been processing organic waste for the City of Ottawa since 2010. Here organic waste is converted into compost, bedding and fertilizer for the agricultural sector and for the City itself. The Ottawa facility also operates during harsh Canadian winters without issues. The plant has a processing capacity of 100,000 tons of organic waste per year, with potential for expansion to 150,000 tons per year.

We are proud to say there are hardly any odours released from this location. This is achieved by ensuring the building and facility are constantly under negative pressure and by maintaining our odour abatement system. Under negative air pressure, when we open the doors to waste collection trucks air is drawn into the building. The air is then expelled from the tunnels by passing through a multi-step odour abatement system to remove odour particles before exiting through a vapour stack.
