Fairmont Bee Sustainable Program

Fairmont Bee Sustainable Program

(Theme 4 – Habitat, Theme 5 – Food, Theme 8 – Health)

Organization: Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel and Government of Canada

Timeline for Completion: Started May, 2019 Ongoing

Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has been committed to protecting the environment for close to 30 years. A big part of that commitment is looking for new creative ways to enhance its award-winning Fairmont Sustainability Partnership, now part of Accor’s Planet21 program.
Fairmont’s approach combines leading operational efforts aimed at reducing overall impact on the planet with forward-thinking and innovative programs promoting responsible tourism. As a core part of the Fairmont DNA, this commitment to environmental stewardship includes the Bee Sustainable program – a bee-focused initiative that aids habitat protection, pollination of gardens and flowers, and helps to support honey bee health

Government officials approached the hotel with a partnership idea after learning that Fairmont operated rooftop apiaries at some of its other facilities in Canada. Since the Château’s roofline does not lend itself to an apiary, federal officials offered a site at the temporary Senate building (across the street). The Government of Canada thought that maybe it’s a way to raise awareness on the importance of bees in an urban environment — and to educate people about the importance of a healthy bee population.

Staff from the nearby Fairmont Château Laurier manage the hives. The harvested honey is used as part of culinary dishes served at the hotel.

Fairmont proudly partners with Pollinator Partnership, a leader in the protection and promotion of pollinators and their ecosystems for over 20 years. Visit www.pollinator.org to learn more about how you can get involved to support our bees.
