Manor Park Tree Canopy Project

The Manor Park Tree Canopy began as an idea following OBEC’s Manor Park Community Sustainability Plan, where community members identified the need for local urban tree protection. From this, the Manor Park Community Association (MPCA) Environmental Sustainability Committee launched a Neighbourhood Tree Canopy Project; a citizen science-based tree inventory which has since branched out to work with other local organizations to monitor and protect local trees with partnerships across the City.

Based on their goals to encourage community involvement and education, document the current status of tree populations, and gather data to monitor local development and inform stakeholders, MPCA Environmental Sustainability Committee has partnered up with Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City (OBEC) and Ottawa Eco-Talent Network (OETN) to assist in the project’s implementation.

Ottawa Biosphere Eco-City (OBEC) and Ottawa Eco-Talent Network (OETN) have worked collaboratively to increase the committee’s capacity to effectively protect the local trees by recruiting uOttawa Master’s students and providing resources and communications expertise. Students of the Master’s of Environmental Sustainability Program will assist in the creation of: (1) a guidance manual for the general public and community associations to make a reliable tree canopy inventory, (2) a final report with a literature review, interviews with relevant actors (ex: residents or city officials) to better understand the systems facilitating and hindering the conservation of local tree canopies, (3) a brochure with a summary of the final report for local stakeholders involved in sustainable planning and development.

By involving the students of uOttawa in this project, they will provide research-based recommendations for better practices to identify local biodiversity, create an inventory of the local tree cover, and how to utilize this information to achieve the community’s sustainability goals and needs. Additionally, OBEC and OETN will be engaging the Manor Park community further in the Spring of 2022 by providing informational pamphlets outlining the inventory project, the importance of tree canopies and resources available within the City to help the tree canopy.
