Organization: Friends of Petrie Island, in partnership with the Ottawa Stewardship Council (OSC) and Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club
Timeline for Completion: Started 2019 (3 year project)
Objective:
The Friends of Petrie Island, in partnership with the Ottawa Stewardship Council and Ottawa Field Naturalists’ Club (OFNC), is conducting a tree inventory over three years from 2019 through 2021. The purpose of the inventory is to:
establish a baseline against which changes can be measured; and
identify invasive species and their locations.
The 2019 inventory documented 443 trees and focused on the middle of the island, which has the greatest concentration of Hackberry and the most diversity. The variety of unusual species is high in this area. The 2020 inventory is completing the middle and the east side of the island, which has a concentration of large Cottonwoods that beavers are taking down. The 2021 inventory will address the west side of the main island and the small island to the south.
